![]() ![]() Yet despite the law, indigenous peoples and forests in the Peruvian Amazon continue to face threats from oil companies, oil palm plantations, loggers, gold miners, and others. Partly as a result of the Baguazo events, in 2011 the Peruvian Congress passed a law recognizing indigenous peoples' right to free prior and informed consent, in relation to policies and investments that affect their territories. They even said that the demonstrators had a right to block highways because they did so in an effort to defend a healthy environment-a “higher purpose,” the judges said, than ensuring that commercial trucks could pass through on time. Based on extensive anthropological testimony, the judges' ruling explains in depth why the indigenous demonstrators behaved as they did. They noted that Peruvian law respects legal pluralism and indigenous peoples' traditional legal systems. The judges ruled that calling for and participating in demonstrations was not subversive-it was an exercise of the right to free expression. On September 22, the three presiding judges unanimously found the defendants not guilty of all charges, noting that all those who died were killed by bullets, and the indigenous defendants were not carrying guns. The film’s national premiere in Peru comes at a fitting time in the story of the case it documents. Today, the film opens in Peru-where its dramatic narrative is set, and where it will undoubtedly rekindle national debate about the lessons from the Baguazo. It is set to premiere in Australia, India, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. “ The film makes its case powerfully,” wrote critic Dennis Harvey in Variety, noting its resonance with “myriad parallel situations in which private commercial interests continue to trump environmental ones worldwide.” When Two Worlds Collide premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and has won critical acclaim and widespread coverage. When Two Worlds Collide-a documentary eight years in the making by first-time filmmakers Heidi Brandenburg and Matthew Orzel, produced with Ford’s support-captures this conflict between indigenous communities determined to protect their tribal lands, and government-supported business interests eager to open those lands up to oil drilling, mining, and clear-cutting. For the past 28 months, they have traveled constantly from remote rural areas to the court in Bagua for legal proceedings, and have endured great hardships to pay their legal expenses. All of them proclaimed their innocence and claimed the government was using them as scapegoats for the tragic violence. The leaders were charged with numerous counts of murder, subversion, rioting, and blocking access, among other crimes. The ensuing crisis led Prime Minister Yehude Simon to resign and the Peruvian Congress to finally repeal the objectionable laws.įive years later, the government pressed criminal charges against 52 indigenous leaders for the events of June 5, known popularly as the Baguazo. Twenty-three police officers and 10 civilians were killed, and countless others were injured. On June 5, 2009, President Alan García declared a state of emergency and sent troops to clear the highways, unleashing mayhem. ![]() Months of protests followed, and indigenous peoples blocked highways as they demanded the laws be repealed. These laws posed a major threat to the environment, as well as to the rights of indigenous peoples who relied on the forest and rivers. In 2008, the Peruvian government approved laws facilitating oil drilling and logging in the Amazon. ![]() ![]() ![]() When it comes to choosing the main fabric and coordinating fabric for a custom window treatment, solids are typically reserved for the coordinating fabric. I also wanted to comment about the fabric choice here since it quite unusual. Notice how the fabric on the rod pocket is pulled across the curtain rod to give the valance a simple and tailored look. This gives it a structured look that’s more at home in spaces with transitional design.īox pleat balloon valance – a bit more transitional. By doing the box pleat style, the top of the valance has a clean rod pocket (or is pulled taut on a board if a board mount valance is chosen). Rather than have a balloon valance that’s excessively gathered on the rod, it’s possible to keep it clean and tailored. TIP #3 Choose Box Pleat Valances for a Modernized Look Anything less than that and the valance is missing volume, or will just become a balloon valance that has less volume and hangs more casually. There are many types of balloon valance patterns, but for a standard valance that is supposed to be about 20 inches long, it needs to be about triple that in length when opened up and ironed. A final note on this idea – I understand that there are valances that are slightly gathered at the bottom hem, but I am talking about a true and authentic balloon valance here. By the way, you can find more ideas of bathroom valances in this post. It takes a lot of fabric to be able to create poufs that are as deep as the ones found on this window treatment. It may look very simple at first, but don’t let that fool you. This gathered custom valance leans more towards a traditional style with its gathered composition and fabric in solid beige. If you were to sit on the floor and look up at a balloon valance from below, this is how its poufs are supposed to look from that angle: The following picture isn’t the most flattering, but it gets the point across. That way, when the valance falls in place after hanging, it would look something like this up close: Ideally, you want about 6 to 10 folds total for a rich valance of standard height. If you can’t form at minimum of 4 folds at the bottom of a balloon valance that are each deep and pronounced, then the valance is missing some fabric. It’s saddening to see a balloon valance that’s so short, its poufs can’t even form properly. To be honest, this is one of my pet peeves. A black and gray leopard print was used here as an accent fabric unexpectedly. Here, we see a balloon shade made with a dupioni silk that has a vibrant green color. This helps it coordinate with the brown and pink floral cotton. Even though the gingham check has black in it, it also has some tan. Here’s another example with the same identical gingham check fabric. ![]() ![]() Our workroom added a black and tan gingham check in between to put emphasis on each pouf. Think the fabric you want is too busy to pull this off? This Jacobean floral print has plenty of color and is quite busy. To make sure this happens, a vibrant red was carefully selected for the fabric in between each of the poufs. Obviously, the aim here was to bring attention to the rooster medallion in the center of each pouf. Take a look at this French country toile valance in yellow. But for balloon valances with more complex patterns, this is a great idea. Now, if you just have a standard balloon valance, this might not be a possibility. To make sure each pouf stands out, it’s a good idea to introduce a coordinating fabric with a high contrast in between each pouf. TIP #1 Use a Coordinating Fabric with High Contrast ![]() ![]() ![]() Paul Biddinger chief preparedness and continuity officer for Massachusetts General Brigham.īut, he added, that should change this fall, when, if as expected, Moderna and Pfizer get full FDA approval. ![]() Right now, because of the FDA’s “Emergency Use Authorization” of the vaccines, the only way to get a booster - legitimately - is through a clinical trial, said Dr. But in Washington, a White House spokeswoman said WHO is presenting a “false choice,” and the Wall Street Journal reported that the FDA expects to have a strategy on boosters by early September. Critics of people receiving boosters while others await their first shot say it’s unethical. But Israel has already started giving them to older people, and they’ve been approved in Germany and the United Kingdom. On Wednesday, in an attempt to increase vaccination in poor countries, the head of the World Health Organization called for a moratorium on booster shots. “But you already have a shot,” she said, before Hart Holder hustled her family away. Hart Holder herself cut short a third try, at a mobile site outside the Franklin Park Zoo, when her 6-year-old became curious after she overheard mom asking about ID requirements. “As such, they are not being offered at Hannaford locations.” “No it isn’t,” she responded before accepting defeat.Īfter being contacted by the Globe seeking response to Hart Holder’s interaction, Hannaford added a caveat to its vaccine scheduler site: “According to the CDC and FDA, Americans who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need a booster shot,” it reads. “Do you need an ID to get the shot?”Īt this point, even Hart Holder knew she was not, technically, in the right, either, but she couldn’t help herself. The employee called out to the pharmacist. “Your website says you don’t need to show it,” Hart Holder responded. “I need to see your ID,” the employee said. “Identification and insurance are not required to receive a COVID-19 vaccine,” its website reads. It was a no-go.Īfter doing research, she decided to hit a Hannaford in New Hampshire. Before she could hustle in, the pharmacy ran her insurance. Her first attempt was at CVS, where she made an online appointment - with her real name, but without mentioning her J&J shot at Walgreens in May. “We don’t know what the long-term effects are,” she said.īut here’s her challenge: Hart Holder, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, can’t bring herself to come straight out and lie and claim she hasn’t received a vaccine before. She’s vaccinated, but after reading about J&J’s potential ineffectiveness against Delta, she - like many parents of kids under 12 - became worried about getting infected and exposing her unvaccinated children, ages 3 and 6, to possible health problems down the road. Let’s join Rebecca Hart Holder of Jamaica Plain, on her booster odyssey. ![]() (He can’t - but more on the rules later.) “People are trying to get that third shot by hook or by crook,” said Peter Grinspoon, an internist at Massachusetts General Hospital who’s been bombarded with “can you help me’s” from patients and friends. People who got J&J may be particularly eager to get an extra shot (even though a new study, out of South Africa, shows it is effective against Delta), but as cases mount, and COVID closes in again, many who got Moderna or Pfizer are also interested, according to observers, as are those with compromised immune systems. Others are darting into pharmacies where they’ve heard no questions will be asked or falsely declaring that they have not already gotten a jab. Some are crossing state lines in hopes of evading detection. With the Delta variant surging, and breakthrough cases in Massachusetts nearing 8,000, people are already deciding they do not have time to wait. But on Friday afternoon, news broke that the FDA is hastening efforts to approve extra shots for people with weakened immune systems, a move that seems likely to fuel desire among the general population, since it will be seen as legitimizing their efficacy. Vaccine providers in Massachusetts are not permitted to provide boosters, since they are not authorized by the Food and Drug Administration. And the CDC keeps changing what we’re supposed to do.” “Who’s looking out for us? My doctor hasn’t called me. “I feel like we have to fend for ourselves,” said the wife, who asked not to be named. ![]() ![]() ![]() Income-oriented mutual funds to consider include the PIMCO Total Return ( PTTAX) and the Vanguard Equity Income Fund ( VEIPX). Theres 3 ''Castles'' (One is a Museum or whatever) and they are arguably the best place to start if you spawn near them. WW2 bunker - Once you enter you will leave with atleast 1 weapon and ammo for it, but most of the time you will have 2 weapons and ammo for it, stun grenades and some clothing. You can do this on a floor if necessary but try to get one in before jumping out if bed. Inhale back to center, exhale and rest, then repeat for the other side. Then, inhale as you turn your head to the right, and as you exhale, "melt" into the stretch. Here are some of the easiest yoga moves for beginners, that have a higher likelihood of helping with migraines:įrom bed 1st thing in the morning: while laying on your back, inhale as you raise your right leg to the ceiling (straight or bent at the knee, both options work), then exhale as you lower it down to your left. It works for some but sadly doesn't help everyone. Many people have tried yoga for migraines. ![]() The key is to be comfortable in those shapes, and just breathe. Restorative yoga is, most often, a collection of fully supported asana/shapes with no work to them, so if you're feeling crappy but can get on the floor or even your bed with some cushions, blankets, etc., you can often still do some form of practice. We tend to breathe more shallowly when in pain, and for some people, having a yoga practice to focus on can help them overcome that during an attack. Balance can always be done by a wall or next to a table or chair, and some days will be better than others, which is 100% ok.įor rough days, migraine days, etc., you may find restorative yoga to be a good option. You may find you need to be careful about how you come out of them - coming up from standing folds can be interesting if I'm getting or have a migraine. This can be tricky for some migraine folks, but even down dog or a wide legged forward fold can be good options. Inversion does not necessarily mean standing on your head, though you can work toward that if you'd like- but some time with your head lower than your heart. It will include moving your body in most of the ways it can - forward, backward, and side bending, twists, balance, inversion. Most active styles of yoga will help with postural muscles and many practices/teachers also incorporate stuff that works on neck/shoulders/back stuff that many students struggle with as it relates to tight/weak areas or too much time spent sitting, working at a desk, or driving.Ī well-rounded practice will include a balance of stretch and strength (there's a huge misconception that yoga is all about stretch only one style focuses on that and the intention isn't about the muscles in that case). As a general rule for prevention and better health overall, any well-rounded practice that you enjoy will likely be fine. While 'yoga for migraine' exists, nothing about yoga is one size fits all, and yoga during an attack will be very dependent on how you feel, what you can tolerate, and what styles you actually find you enjoy.
